When looking for the perfect summer camp for your kids, it’s important to always speak with camps before enrolling. By having an open conversation with a camp director or camp owner, you can gain valuable insights and can quickly determine if the camp is the right fit for your child. So, what should you be asking? Here are some key questions to ask camp directors before enrolling:

Ask about the program and philosophy

  • What is your camp’s overall philosophy? (goals for campers, fun vs growth or both, competitiveness, program structure)
  • How are you different from other camps?
  • What licensing do you have? Are you accredited by the American Camp Association? If not, why?
  • How do you handle illness and injury?
  • What safety protocols do you have in place?
  • What ways do you communicate or update families throughout the summer?
  • What isn’t included in tuition? Any extra costs we should know about?
  • Ask them to explain any negative reviews they may have got

Ask about the campers

  • What kind of campers are successful at your camp?
  • How do you help integrate new campers?
  • What is your return rate for campers?
  • Besides aging out, what are the main reasons campers don’t return to your camp?
  • Can you provide references for former or current families I can speak with?

Learn about the staff

  • Who are your counselors and how do you hire them?
  • What training does your staff receive and how long is the training?
  • What is your staff return rate?
  • What qualifications and experience does your leadership staff have? How long have they been in their positions?

Talk openly about your child’s needs

  • Can you accommodate my camper’s needs? (food allergies, behavior, recent divorce, etc.)
  • Address any concern no matter how small (such as bedwetting, afraid of the dark, picky eater, etc.)
  • Share what interests they have and how they do socially at home and school

Chestnut Lake Camp – Coed camp in Pennsylvania

This is your opportunity to ask questions that matter most to you and your child. While this list is a great starting point, tailor your questions to fit the specific needs and interests of your child. Remember, the best camps are eager to answer your questions, won’t pressure you, and provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision.
